Episode 17: Midtown Greenway Streetcar
This show is about a proposal for a streetcar on the Midtown Greenway in south Minneapolis. The Midtown Greenway is a trench across town that was build for railroad freight trains over one hundred years ago. More than ten years ago it was bought by Hennepin County as a future Light Rail corridor, but before that could be funded a community organization called the Midtown Greenway Coalition was formed to turn the trench into a bicycling/pedestrian trail.
The Midtown Greenway Coalition also is actively working to build a streetcar next to the walking and biking trails. This On Transit show features Midtown Greenway Coalition members speaking about this streetcar proposal, and on transit in general. There are images of streetcar systems in San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle.
This proposed streetcar would like the dense Uptown area of Minneapolis with the Hiawatha Line train and is a win/win in all respects.
